ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children.

Early in the year, the Rotary Club of Burnside was approached by ROMAC to help support a mother and son from the Solomon Islands. The son, Stanric, was 17 months old with a congenital spinal defect needing urgent surgery. There are no facilities or experienced surgeons to do this the procedure in the Solomon Islands. ROMAC provided the arrangements for Stanric and his mother to come to Adelaide for the surgery.

The Rotary Club of Burnside, as well as other Rotary Clubs, were asked to provide support for the mother while Stanric was in hospital. Stanric had major surgery and was in hospital for 10 days. Unfortunately he developed a wound infection and had to stay longer. Soon he was ready for discharge. The Solomon Island community also provided much needed support.

A celebration for Stanric BBQ was organised by ROMAC and The Rotary Club of Burnside supplied the BBQ. As a parting gift, a member from the Rotary Club of Burnside, through his contacts, organised free passes for Stanric and his mother to visit Cleland Wildlife Park. Both enjoyed the day immensely, especially the opportunity to see a Koala up close.

They have now returned home and Stanric is doing very well. It was a pleasure to be part of Stanric’s time in Adelaide.

ROMAC do an amazing job bringing children to Australia for life saving medical and surgical treatment. All the children come from places that can not provide the expertise or facilities they need.
