Vocational tour Wednesday 15th May 2024. Gawler Central Railway Station.

The members of the Rotary club met at the Adelaide Railway station to take the train to Gawler Central.

“The station opened in May 1911 as Willaston, being renamed North Gawler in September 1911, and Gawler Central on 12 February 1984. In the early 1920s, the South Australian Railways decided to extend suburban service to all stations within a 25-mile (40 km) radius of Adelaide station. North Gawler, which is located 26 miles 14 chains from Adelaide, was not included. From May 1911 until the 19th of June 1989, Willaston, Gawler North and eventually Gawler Central station had a station manager or staff member on site to sell tickets to passengers on the rail network”.

“VOCATIONAL DAY TRIP to GAWLER CENTRAL Wednesday 15 May Firstly, commiserations to all of those Members and their Friends and Partners who missed on this great trip! Well done Craig for organising another great Adventure. Craig and Pat, Brian and Pam, Bob C, Peter F, Des M and one of Craig’s many mates, Graham “Lushy” Lush had a great day riding the new electric train to the end of the line at Gawler Central and then back again later in the day. The train is just like the underground in Paris but clean, quiet, on time and most people spoke English! After arriving at Gawler Central, we had a short walk to the Exchange Hotel where the biggest problem was choosing from a great menu with a good selection of wines and, we didn’t have to drive home, there was a driver at the front of the train to do that. Good company, plenty of chat and acquainting or reacquainting us with points of interest not that far from home and something different, riding on a train”.
