“Bright and early on a crisp Sunday morning, our team of volunteers assembled at the Shed before taking a circuitous route avoiding the road closures, down to Colley Tce, Glenelg, to staff the finish line drink stations for this year’s City-Bay Fun Run. There, Rotary marquees from various clubs (including The Rotary club of Burnside) were set up either side of the road. Providing water and Hydralyte rehydration stations for the runners and walkers as they passed under the Finish arch. We settled in and there were a few quiet moments before the first half-Marathon runners started arriving, and from there, the volumes built. A brief tail-off, then the 12 kilometer runners started coming through, and from there numbers surged till Colley Terrace was awash with runners and then walkers passing through. Some rather surprising participants made their appearance – assorted superheroes, some Marilyn’s, Star Wars characters and our very own Treasurer Des!.
At the peak our team and the rest of the Rotary volunteers on drinks were under the pump to keep water and Hydralyte flowing, but everyone stepped up and the crowds were served. Many runners thanked us for volunteering. With the lulls a bit of networking and socialising between the clubs.
By 11.30 it was down to the stragglers coming through and the organiser gave us the nod to leave, so we folded our tents and headed off home for a well earned lunch”.
Thanks to our team Susan, David, Murray, Ian Vayne, JR and Brian Wall.
